Bhutan Day 1 - the start of the adventure
I will skip over the flights, Indian bureaucracy and the interesting landing at Paro Airport (probably the world’s most attractive airport terminal).
We checked into our hotel in Paro late morning, which, while modern, reflected the external style we would become used to.
After lunch etc. we set out for the river and our first birding. On the way we passed the Paro Dzong. Each district of Bhutan is centred around a Dzong which is a fortified monastery and administrative building.
At the river we see our first important species - Ibisbill
Further on we encounter our first Hoopoe - looking much greyer than those we are used to seeing in Europe.
Perhaps the star bird of the day was Black-tailed Crake. Unfortunately I could only get what you would generously call a “record shot”. Here it is anyway.
As we head back to the hotel a chance to see the typical townscape and painted building fronts that characterise Bhutan.
Not a bad start to the trip. An early night as we had to be up well before dawn the next day.
