23rd July - Eastwell

On our regular walks to Eastwell Church we have seen 2 adult Spotted Flycatchers – increasingly hard to find these days..

We have not seen any young birds – yet.

Dungeness 19th July

The White-tailed Lapwing is still present but decided to stay sat on the shingle.  We saw a Purple Heron flying to and from the nest site.

We saw a small group of Tree Sparrows at the reserve entrance

and a Corn Bunting sang from the wires nearby.   A Black-tailed Skimmer basked on the reeds at Dengemarsh.

Butterflies etc.

Hamstreet Woods and King’s Wood and good for butterflies at this time of year.  We saw White Admiral at both sites and Silver-washed Fritillary at Hamstreet, although both did not want to pose for the camera.

Here is a selection.

White-tailed Lapwing

A White-tailed Lapwing arrived at Dungeness on 11th July via Lancashire, Essex and Gloucestershire.  It was still present this morning when I went to see it.

This is a first for Kent (and me!)

Rather too far away for photography but here is a record shot.

11th June - Simcoe

I have finally got round to finishing the blog!!!!!!

We had a fantastic trip - birds, wildlife, scenery and great company - what more could you want.

We spent some time on the deck on the last day.  Here is a selection of photos from that day.

American Goldfinch    Rose-breasted Grosbeak  White-breasted Nuthatch   Squirrel

And the one bird we didn’t see on our first trip (amazingly)

Northern Cardinal

10th June - Simcoe

The day starts very wet and windy so we decide to spend some time sorting out and (in my case) catching up with my blog!.

After lunch we walk along a section of the Simcoe-Port Dover railway which is now a 10K trail.  Very pleasant to get out into the open after the wet morning.

8th June - Prince Edward County

The last day of our “road trip”.  It’s another lovely day  and we spend the first part of it exploring Sandbanks Provincial Park on the island.

American Goldfinch   Killdeer

We don’t get any new birds for the trip but we do get good views of a Brown Thrasher.

After an excellent ice cream we set off for Simcoe arriving home at about 9:30.

Photos to follow.

7th June - Prince Edward County

We spend the day exploring the island - the weather is warm and sunny.

At the Observatory at Prince Edward Point we get a couple of new birds: Tennessee Warbler and Eastern Towhee.  We see quite a few other species (including Yellow Warbler), Turkey Vultures and a couple of Red-tailed Hawks overhead.

Leopard Frog    Eastern Towhee

At one point we pass a dead tree with Turkey Vultures roosting.

Turkey Vulture    Turkey Vulture

At the south-west point of the island we get brief views of Eastern Meadowlark.

6th June - back into Canada

We drive into Canada in heavy rain.  We were intending to take a 1000 Islands boat trip but the visibility is so poor we decide not to bother.

We drive along the Loyalist Highway and cross into Prince Edward County.  We spend some time at the Lake in the Mountain watching Tree and Cliff Swallows catching insects over the lake.

We go to our B&B – Duck and Loon in Picton.

5th June - Adirondacks

Driving through the Adirondacks today.

Before we set off we spend some time at the Vermont Audubon Centre.  We get three new birds for the trip – House Wren, Veery and Indigo Bunting.  I get some (pretty poor) shots of the latter and a singing Common Yellowthroat.

Indigo Bunting    Common Yellowthroat

The weather as we drive is rather cloudy so we don’t see as much of the scenery as we would like.

We do spot a Golden Eagle being harried by crows.

We spend the night in Tupper Lake NY and we eat in a “small town America” diner – an interesting experience.
